T3 (Training to Transition)

T3 is a half-day senior class event that takes place in the fall in which students identify post-secondary goals, learn more about specific careers, and talk one-on-one with business people. Assisting students to develop networking skills is one of the most crucial goals of the day. Many of our students have never had the chance to speak with adults who are not family members or teachers. T3 allows students to overcome many of their misconceptions about the business world and connect with adults with interesting and successful career paths.

The day is divided into several sessions including workshops with current college students, round table discussions with business partners and one-on-one informational interviews with business partners where students have the opportunity to receive individual attention through mock interviews and resume reviews.

Umoja recruits business partners who represent a variety of career areas with an emphasis on Business Technology and Entrepreneurship, Medical Arts, Culinary Arts, Graphic Arts and Construction Technology to complement the technical training offered to Manley students. Umoja needs T3 volunteers who are comfortable speaking with adolescents and able to share their own educational and career experiences. Please join us and help us to recruit other volunteers.

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:

Community Connections
Each February Umoja coordinates a half-day event in which we invite volunteers who can truly represent the heart and vision of African American History Month to spend a day in the classroom with teachers and students. Volunteers co-facilitate with teachers to enter into dialogue around issues of culture, history, possibilities, and the future. Through reading, writing, and discussion this day helps students examine their own thoughts and opinions about their history, and gives them the chance to articulate those thoughts to their peers and to business and community leaders. Umoja is always seeking volunteers to share the spirit and activism of African American History Month. Please consider joining us.

Guest Speaking and Classroom Support
Numerous times throughout the school year Umoja has guest speaking opportunities. These opportunities can include co-facilitating half-day activities with teachers around student development activities, speaking at a career day 30-minute presentation with a class of grammar school students, presenting at a booth at a health fair, speaking to a group of students about college and future plans, or school-wide assemblies around any number of topics. Volunteers who are comfortable speaking about their experiences and interacting with adolescents are invaluable to Umoja.

Job Shadowing/Site Visit
Job shadowing entails hosting a pair of young people at your business or firm. During job shadowing experiences, students shadow you or one of your employees in order to see, first hand, the work your firm does and the role of various employees. Site visits expose a larger group of young people to the ins and outs of your company and your career path through a company tour and discussion. Each time our students are exposed to new careers their world gets bigger. Help us to expand our students understanding of their options.

Internships and Employment
Create a meaningful work opportunity for one or more young people combining learning opportunities with work experience. Hire a young person who has successfully interned with you for an ongoing job within your company/firm.

Tutoring at the Academic Resource Center
The Academic Resource Center is open during lunch and after school and needs volunteers to provide informal tutoring as well as engaging in activities with the students during this time.

Sponsorship (Corporate or Individual)
Sponsor one of Umoja’s college trips, a specific student’s summer program or provide a college scholarship for specific needs like books or room and board.

Corporate Connections
Help Umoja make connections in a variety of ways to your corporation or another corporation with whom you have a connection. Umoja is currently working to expand our corporate involvement and needs your help!

If you would like to volunteer with Umoja please email Raven Moore at rmoore@umojacorporation.org or use the contact form and we will work with you to find the best fit with your skills and our needs.
