Umoja provides customized curricular tools, thought partnership with principals, teachers and counselors, ongoing professional development and coaching, and on-the-ground support.

Through Umoja University, school teams build structures and systems that allow adults to cultivate the positive, purposeful relationships that lead to improved student outcomes. Umoja understands that student-adult relationships are most effective when adults are equipped with the tools, continuous training and coaching they need to amplify their impact.

Umoja University is a three-step, year-long school transformation process, which yields a customized action plan and ongoing consulting support throughout the school year. A one-week summer institute provides school teams with the time and expertise they need to build and refine their skills as facilitators, relationship builders and academic advisors. Best practices are shared, and customized curriculum is offered, in the following areas:

   •    College and Career Development
   •    Professional Development for Teachers

Three phases of Umoja's school partnership

PHASE 1

Spring Planning – School stakeholders participate in planning process with Umoja consultants to identify needs as well as existing strengths and resources within the school community.

PHASE 2

Umoja University Summer Institute – Delegation from planning team commits to support the work over the course of the next year as the Student Development Action team. They attend week-long Umoja University where teachers, counselors and administrators engage in building their own skills and their own solutions. Teams leave with a Student Development action plan that includes their goals for success, how progress will be measured over time, and their commitment to incorporate student voice in meaningful ways throughout the process.

PHASE 3

Ongoing Customized Support – Umoja staff supports the school through ongoing principal collaboration, facilitation of Student Development Action Team, curriculum customization, professional development and coaching, and integration with other school initiatives. Umoja provides “boots on the ground” support to insure that each school can stay true to its goals and, ultimately, to its students.
