Badhaftu Kadir Social Emotional Learning Specialist
Badhaftu joined the Umoja family in January 2018. Badhaftu graduated with a BA in Political Science with an emphasis on education and domestic policy from Macalester College.
During her time at Mac she gained a love for youth work especially college and career readiness. She was co-leader of the college prep program AVID, in which she recruited and prepped fellow student mentors to assist students in SAT/ACT prep, FAFSA, and overall applications. After college Badhaftu did a Corps Year as a City Year Mentor in a third grade class in the Bronx, NY. During her time there she was introduced to the concept of SEL and was able to use it in groups for students as well as school wide initiatives like an Annual March Madness teachers vs. City Year members’ basketball game. Where she worked with the student council to present stress management tools and relaxation strategies to be used with their peers around testing. Most recently, she worked as a Community Partnership Specialist for Girl Scouts River Valleys in Minnesota. Her duties were diverse, ranging from mentorship to partnership management to curriculum creation. Day to day, she was a mentor for over 250 girls ranging from K-12th grade at a dozen sites. She met with troops weekly throughout the school year and delivered culturally relevant curriculum that focused on such topics as healthy relationships and self-esteem, college and career readiness, STEM, financial literacy, and service learning. Badhaftu now serves as an SEL specialist at Wells Community Academy High School.
