AJ Johnson-Garrett Social Emotional Learning Specialist | Site: Gage Park HS
AJ (she/her/hers) joined Umoja in January 2018.
Growing up in a military family, AJ experienced many schools, in addition to being a Chicago Public High School graduate. For 10 years she worked to organize youth, adults, and community to implement quality-of-life plans. During that time, she developed a love for helping young people discover their individual passions, voice and decision-making power. While AJ's professional experience is in community empowerment and program development as a community organizer, she pursued a Bachelor of Communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Oftentimes she used the concepts of facilitation to create an environment that supports collaboration among adults and youth to fuel collective goal. Throughout the year she's Chair of Steering Committee for Chicago Coalition on Urban Girls and advocates for gender-responsive practices in education, public health and criminal justice to girls in the City of Chicago. With her background in youth-adult collaboration, strategic communication, and community organizing, AJ is enthused to contribute her experience and skills to take the Umoja team to new heights.
