Maggie Lopez Social Emotional Learning Specialist | Site: Sullivan HS

Maggie (she/her/hers)joined the Umoja team in August 2018. 

Maggie has worked in youth development, college access, and direct student services in multiple capacities for the past 5+ years. Prior to starting at Umoja, Maggie worked for The Posse Foundation, a national college success and scholarship program. During her time at Posse, she recruited, trained, and supported cohorts of students attending top colleges and universities around the country. For the 2019-2020 school year, she will be working at Roger C. Sullivan High School in Rogers Park. At Sullivan, she will be supporting Social Emotional Learning efforts through freshman, junior and senior SEL seminar classes. In addition, we will be providing post-secondary support in partnership with the counseling team and helping implement Restorative Justice practices through community-building circles in classrooms. Maggie is first-generation, a proud child of immigrants from Guatemala and Honduras, and a native Spanish speaker. She was born and raised in the neighborhood of Koreatown in Los Angeles, California. Maggie attended Vassar College in New York where she majored in Sociology with a concentration in Education and Latino/a Studies. At Vassar, her passion for educational equity was sparked. In her personal and professional life, she strives to continue to create equitable environments for all people.
