Rachel (she/her/hers) joined the Umoja team in July 2014
Rachel is a bright force of positive energy in her work as an SEL Manager. She has spent the last five years working in various CPS High Schools, supporting seminars and ensuring that students graduated with a plan for after high school! A Chicago native, she brings a fierce, unique energy to everything she does while remaining dedicated and passionate about inspiring change in the lives of students. Umoja facilitated Rachel's return to Chicago after her time in Washington DC where she graduated from Howard University; followed by her time in New York City where she worked in Radio, Television, and film before subsequently attending Columbia University's Teacher College. She spent several years as an elementary school teacher in New York before making her triumphant return home to Chicago. Currently, Rachel supports 2 levels of Seminar at Marie Curie High School and 9th-grade advisory at the newly opened Englewood STEM, as well as the diversity equity and inclusion work at Umoja. When she's not at Umoja, Rachel spends her time caring for her family. She is also a voracious reader, world-traveler, student of pop culture & politics, and mother to a precocious 3-year-old.
